TN-C-S Earthing System Explained

TN-C-S uses a combined PEN function upstream and separates neutral and protective-earth functions at the service position. The exact network arrangement and installation requirements must always be verified for the real site.

What the letters mean

The first T indicates a source point connected to Earth. The C-S part describes a combined neutral/protective function in part of the system and separate neutral and protective conductors in the installation section.

The key visual idea

Upstream, the PEN conductor performs both neutral and protective functions. At the defined intake position the arrangement separates so the installation has distinct neutral and protective-earth paths.

Understanding the separation point helps make sense of bonding, fault-return paths and why neutral and protective conductors must not be treated as interchangeable inside the installation.
